It’s the perennial challenge for artists, musicians and comedians to be able to capture something in the frozen form of a photographic portrait that conveys their unique sensibility, and clarifies their point of difference.

In the case of Australian jazz heavyweight, Simon Starr – he had it all worked out – and I was only to happy to oblige.

Eschewing anything approaching a traditional head shot, Simon channelled his own irreverence by inviting me to take some shots of him shaving away his stubbly three day growth.

Shot in a mid-century bathroom with diffused light and fantastically retro tiles, the scene was set for some photographic phrivolity. Together with the retro golden shaver, we got some great images that Simon was able to use to great affect.
